Abstract: A foreign body granuloma is a mass lesion consisting of a foreign body with host reaction. Its diagnosis is not always easy in respect of its similarity to soft tissue sarcoma. The most common foreign body is surgical sponge which can be detectable macroscopically. We present a foreign body granuloma in the left buttock caused by microscopic surgical materials that developed into a large lesion. An 80-year-old man with a history of surgery for dislocation of the left hip 20 years earlier, presented with a slowly growing mass that had expanded rapidly over the preceding 2 months. Histological examination revealed organizing granulation tissue surrounding the scattered foreign materials. One should be aware of foreign body granuloma at previously operated sites even without a retained macroscopic gauze sponge.

Abstract: Retroisthmic cleft refers to a cleft in the lamina and is rarely reported. It was first described by Brocher, and later Wick et al. proposed the term “laminolysis” to describe the retroisthmic cleft by analogy with the nomenclature of the applied stress fracture of the pars interarticularis (spondylolysis) and the pedicle (pediculolysis). In this paper, we describe two adolescent sports players with symptomatic lumbar laminolysis. Both improved significantly after adequate conservative treatment. Knowledge of laminolysis in adolescent patients with low back pain is necessary to avoid overlooking it and late diagnosis. For correct diagnosis, multidetector three-dimensional computed tomography (CT) is suggested. In addition, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) also allows detection of inflammation in the defects.

Abstract:

Automated falling detection is one of the important tasks in this ageing society. Such systems are supposed to have little interference on daily life. Doppler sensors have come to the front as useful devices to detect human activity without using any wearable sensors. The conventional Doppler sensor based falling detection mechanism uses the features of only one sensor. This paper presents falling detection using multiple Doppler sensors. The resulting data from sensors are combined or selected to find out the falling event. The combination method, using three sensors, shows 95.5% accuracy of falling detection. Moreover, this method compensates the drawbacks of mono Doppler sensor which encounters problems when detecting movement orthogonal to irradiation directions.

Abstract: Zinc ions (Zn2+), known to be a novel intracellular second messenger related to various biological functions, have been delivered inside cells. For the intracellular Zn2+ delivery, Zn2+ has been chelated to carboxymethyl poly(1-vinylimidazole) (CM-PVIm) by mixing zinc chloride (ZnCl2) or zinc acetate (Zn(OAc)2) with CM-PVIm. The resulting Zn2+-chelated CM-PVIm, that is, Zn2+/CM-PVIm complex by mixing ZnCl2 exhibited smaller particle size below 10 nm and possessed larger amount of Zn2+ ions, as compared to the Zn2+/CM-PVIm by mixing Zn(OAc)2. The both Zn2+/CM-PVIm complexes exhibited no significant cytotoxicity, leading to intracellular Zn2+ delivery. The Zn2+/CM-PVIm by mixing ZnCl2 delivered larger amount of intracellular Zn2+ ions than that by mixing Zn(OAc)2. These results suggest that the optimal Zn2+/CM-PVIm complex is a useful tool for intracellular Zn2+ delivery to control various biological functions.

Abstract: Islet transplantation is an essential treatment for type 1 diabetes. However, low engraftment of transplanted islets makes it difficult to maximize the treatment efficacy. Prof. Taniguchi’s research group has developed a method to make tissue organoids including pancreatic islets in vitro, using mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and human umbilical cord-derived endothelial cells (HUVECs) (1). They successfully generated complex tissues including not only islets but also various organ fragments such as liver, kidney, heart, brain, and others. The self-condensation culture of islets with MSCs and HUVECs promoted islet function in vitro and massively improved engraftment after transplantation through rapid induction of functional vascular networks. This in vitro method to fabricate vascularized organoids offers us a promising means of therapeutic tissue transplantation, e.g., pancreatic islets transplantation to treat diabetes

Abstract: It was claimed before that there is no reliable biomarker for atopic dermatitis (AD).1 However, a systematic review recently showed that thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC)/chemokine C-C motif ligand 17, a chemokine involved in type 2 inflammation, is the most reliable biomarker indicating the disease severity of AD.2 Nevertheless, TARC has a disadvantage in that infants and children show significantly higher TARC levels than adults do; TARC levels in infants <1?year old are almost 3 times those of adults (<1367?ng/mL vs <450?ng/mL).

Abstract:

Unlike regular stabilizations, we construct in the paper a specific feedback control system such that u(t) decays exponentially with the designated decay rate, and that some non-trivial linear functionals of u decay exactly faster than \"\". The system contains a dynamic compensator with another state v in the feedback loop, and consists of two states u and v. This problem entirely differs from the one with static feedback scheme in which the system consists only of a single state u. To show the essential difference, some specific property of the spectral subspaces associated with our control system is studied.

Correlation between 99mTcO4- Thyroid Scintigraphy and Blood Test in Primary Hyperthyroidism  [PDF]

Abstract:
Background: The 99mTcO4- thyroid scintigraphy is commonly used for hyperthyroidism diagnosis. Uptake value of 99mTcO4- on thyroid scintigraphy is an indicator of hyperthyroidism activity. Although, the correlation between free T3 value and free T4 value is not necessary clear in primary hyperthyroidism. Introduction: This study investigated the correlation between results of blood test and uptake of 99mTcO4- on thyroid scintigraphy in primary hyperthyroidism. Methodlogy: In this retrspective study, uptake was calculated in patients diagnosed with primary hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease/Basedow’s disease) based on clinical findings, blood tests, thyroid ultrasound, and 99mTcO4- thyroid scintigraphy (uptake ≥3%) at St. Marianna University School of Medicine Hospital between 1 January 2010 and 31 December 2019. This uptake of 99mTcO4- was compared with results of blood tests. Results: Fifty-four consecutively arriving patients at the hospital (12 men, 42 women; mean age 43.0 ± 14.0 years) were selected. Free T3 (n = 54) was 14.6 ± 6.8 pg/mL, free T4 (n = 53) was 5.0 ± 2.3 ng/mL, and uptake on thyroid scintigraphy was 10.0% ± 7.1%. The correlation coefficients were 0.60 (p < 0.01) between free T4 (all case), 0.39 (p < 0.01) between free T4 (under 7 ng/mL), 0.12 (p = 0.70) between free T4 (above 7 ng/mL) and 99mTcO4-?thyroid scintigraphy uptake. Conclusion: In primary hyperthyroidism (Graves’ disease), there is a correlation between free T4 value and 99mTcO4- thyroid scintigraphy uptake, but there is no correlation in patients with high free T4 level.
First-principles electronic-structure calculation of dangling bonds at Si/SiO$_2$ and Ge/GeO$_2$ interfaces

Abstract: Evidence of the absence of the clear electron spin-resonance signal from Ge dangling bonds (DBs) at Ge/GeO$_2$ interfaces is explored by means of first-principles electronic-structure calculations. Comparing the electronic structures of the DBs at Si/SiO$_2$ and Ge/GeO$_2$ interfaces, we found that the electronic structure of the Ge-DB is markedly different from that of the Si-DB; the Ge-DB states does not position in the energy band gap of the Ge/GeO$_2$ interface while the Si-DB states clearly appears. In addition, the charge density distribution of the Ge-DB state spreads more widely than that of the Si-DB state. These features are explained by considering the metallic properties of the bonding network of the Ge/GeO$_2$ interface and the structural deformation of the Ge bulk at the Ge/GeO$_2$ interface due to the lattice-constant mismatch.
